Bouwen aan duurzame energie!

Job description

At RIFT, you will contribute to the development of innovative Iron Fuel (IF) boiler systems. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) plays a crucial role in modelling and optimizing combustion, fluid flow, and heat transfer processes. Currently, Ansys Fluent is used together with an advanced combustion model that enables simulations of iron fuel combustion.

Due to increasing licensing costs and the need for greater flexibility and transparency in solver processes, RIFT aims to transition from Ansys Fluent to OpenFOAM. During this internship, you will actively contribute to this transition.

What will you do?

During this graduation or internship project, you will work on transferring an existing CFD environment from Ansys Fluent to OpenFOAM. You will focus on both the technical implementation and the validation of the new setup.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Transferring CFD simulation setups from Ansys Fluent to OpenFOAM

  • Implementing turbulence and volumetric reaction models

  • Translating existing User Defined Functions (UDFs) from C to C++

  • Setting up boundary conditions, simulation monitoring, and post-processing workflows

  • Verifying and validating the combustion model implementation

  • Investigating suitable numerical schemes and solver settings

  • Comparing numerical accuracy and computational performance between Fluent and OpenFOAM
